How to develop a content strategy for a small website?

You have a "small" website and you have almost no visitors?  You probably haven't worked enough on its SEO. The objective of SEO is to give visibility to a website by making it rise in search engines like Google and therefore increase its traffic. In general, when a website is "small", we think that it is not necessary to do SEO and that it is not worth investing time in this strategy. However, you have to think the other way around: if you don't have any visitors, you have to work on your website's SEO to start getting visitors. In this article, we explain how to work on the SEO of small websites that nobody visits.

Without content strategy, there is no SEO

Of course, if you have a budget to devote to it, you can surround yourself with an SEO agency that will still have to rely on content to get your site to the top of the Google search results. Content is absolutely necessary for any SEO strategy. It doesn't matter how big or small your website is: everyone needs content. Usually, people with small websites think that developing a content strategy involves a lot of time and effort. A content strategy doesn't necessarily mean you have to fill your site with countless blog posts. You can start with two or three articles whose lexical field really corresponds to your activity and that will allow you to climb on the key words. You need to express yourself as an expert in your field and show that you know what you're talking about. And for that, here are some tips:

Don't spread yourself too thin

To start with a content strategy and keeping in mind that we're talking about sites that don't have a budget to invest, it's best to develop only one type of content. Videos, podcasts, webinars, blogs, etc. Focus on one format. What the experts in the field recommend is to start blogging. It's the easiest and least expensive thing to do. If you decide to blog, the first thing you should do is research the keywords for the topic you are blogging about. Especially, look for long tail keywords. What are they? These are longer search queries. Let's take an example. Assuming your website is about car insurance, the keywords "car insurance" or "auto insurance" are the main ones and generate most of the search traffic. But the effective use of these highly competitive keywords eventually wears everyone out. In this case, a long tail may be "best auto insurance company." It doesn't have many monthly searches, but being longer than the top keywords, you could more easily compete with it and generate more traffic.

Plan your articles

You need to plan and write content ahead of time. Ideally, you should have scheduled publication dates and write between one and two articles per week. Once the blog is fully operational, try other types of content. The key should always be to establish a productive and stable routine.

Share your content on social networks

Often, we find very interesting content on a page with few visitors because it has not been properly shared on social networks. You should share them on the most important platforms such as Facebook and Instagram (you can evaluate the success via different techniques). But it's also important that you consider other networks or smaller venues. Facebook groups are one example. If you find a group or several groups related to the topic that calls to you, share your content there.

Track your traffic and SEO

Google Analytics is a great tool to track your traffic and SEO. Thanks to data analysis, you will be able to know the keywords that visitors typed to arrive on your blog and identify the pages that work best. This will allow you to adapt your future content.

Make links

Netlinking is also one of the bases of SEO. To be visible in search engines and especially on Google, a site must be part of a link network. It must therefore have internal links, with articles that respond to each other, but also external links (to other sites of authority talking about the same subject) and inbound links (from other sites on the same theme). Of course, inbound links are the most difficult to obtain. On this point also, you can, in a second time, rely on a SEO agency to get more links.
